He turned fully professional during the Whitbread Round the World race in 1997-98, working both as a trimmer, helmsman and sail co-ordinator onboard Swedish Match.

In 2000, he competed as a watch captain in the Volvo Ocean Race again, on board SEB. He was also responsible for sail design and management.

He then competed on board many different boats, including the 92' Super Yatch Alfa Romeo, before joining the ABN AMRO team and winning the Volvo Ocean Race as helmsman and trimmer. Tony was also part of the ABN AMRO sail design team, working closely with North Sails.
